EXENE CERVENKA / X

Exene Cervenka is is best known as the lead singer and co-founder of the seminal punk band X. Arriving in LA in 1976 (by way of Florida) with $80 in a paperbag, Cervenka found work in the Venice library and immersed herself in the creative community. Through a poetry workshop, she met John Doe who would become her partner in forming X (and for a while, her husband.)

After an early independent record deal that produced two singles, in 1980 the band released their debut album, Los Angeles, produced by The Doors' Ray Manzarek. The Los Angeles Times declared it the "Album Of The Year.") Over the following half-dozen years, the band released another five albums; 1981's Wild Gift was designated "Record of The Year" by Rolling Stone, the L.A. Times, the New York Times and The Village Voice.

X led the late 70's/early 80's Hollywood based punk movement. Rather than the usual punk sound, X's style included unique elements: harmonies, poetic lyrics and a blend of rockabilly, country and metal influences. The mainstream success of X was limited but the band is widely considered one of the most accessible, tuneful and influential punk groups ever, inspiring musicians in genres as diverse as punk, hardcore and folk music.

Band members indulged in side projects, such as the band The Knitters and eventually, both Cervenka and Doe pursued solo careers and worked on other creative outlets; Doe has maintained an active career in motion pictures while Cervenka went on to release poetry and spoken word projects, books and launched the bands Auntie Christ and The Original Sinners. In 2002, the four original members of X (Cervenka and Doe, along with guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D.J. Bonebrake) were inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk.

In 2005, Cervenka's journals and mixed media collages were exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Santa Monica Museum of Art entitled America The Beautiful, and went on to be exhibited in New York City as well.

In 2008, X is on tour celebrating their 31st anniversary.
