CON FUNK SHUN | FELTON PILATE

CON FUNK SHUN is one of the preeminent, iconic R&B groups which dominated the charts and airwaves during the height of the 70's and 80's funk music scene.

High-school friends and classmates, Louis A. McCall (drums) and Michael V. Cooper (lead guitar, lead vocals) formed the group in Vallejo, California in 1969. Rounding out the group were Karl "Deacon" Fuller (trumpet,) Paul "Maceo" Harrell (saxophone & flute, ) Cedric A. Martin (bass,) Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas (keyboards) and Felton "Slyde Clyde" Pilate (trombone, lead vocals.)

The group was originally a backup band for legendary label Stax Records and become one of the most sought-after group of studio musicians. By 1976, they were one of the most popular unsigned touring bands in the South. That July, they were signed to Mercury Records and their first album, CON FUNK SHUN, was released by the end of the year.

CON FUNK SHUN defined funk. Between 1977 and 1986, the band charted twenty times, on both Top 40 and Top 20 Soul Charts, including eight top ten hits and one #1 song ("Ffun" shot up the charts, landing at #1 With A Bullet on the Billboard Top Soul Singles chart in July 1977.)

Over the next decade, CON FUNK SHUN released eleven albums for Mercury (five of which were gold status.)

By the mid-eighties, with music styles and production techniques changing, the musical landscape and direction of the band was in flux. Felton Pilate, the band's lead singer, left the group in 1986 to pursue a solo career; the group's last album was recorded with Melvin Carter, a frequent collaborator, on vocals though CON FUNK SHUN was destined to eventually disband.

However, as the popularity of sampling grew in the rap and hip-hop genres, new generations of music fans were introduced to CON FUNK SHUN's music; also, several compilations and best-of collections have been released on CD and generated strong sales numbers, confirming CON FUNK SHUN's status as the definitive R&B and Funk group of the era. Band co-frontmen, Michael Cooper and Felton Pilate remain successful and vital members of the contemporary music community, touring, recording and producing. They continue to share the music and sound of CON FUNK SHUN with new fans.
